Black Swan

The other night my girlfriends and I went to see the new Natalie Portman flick, Black Swan. This psychological thriller is FANTASTIC. Bubs' had said it was good and a bit scary. Bubs - I'm assuming you mean, the art on the wall scenes?

Black Swan is a Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) directed film about a ballerina battling with her inner-demons. Natalie Portman plays the ballerina and Mila Kunis plays a rival ballerina. Also in the film are Barbara Hershey (love her in Beaches!) as Natalie Portman's mother, and Winona Ryder (didn't recognize her!) as the fading prima ballerina.

The movie dumps you in the middle of Nina's (Portman) OCD life that is consumed by dance. The ballet company that she performs with is preparing to open the ballet season with a new version of Swan Lake. Nina wants the role of the Swan Queen but she has to be able to play both the innocent white swan and the sensual black swan. Mila Kunis is Lily - a new ballerina transferred from San Francisco who is just as good a dancer as Nina. They become friends and yes there is the infamous girl-on-girl scene - but there's so much more to the movie than that. There's the controlling mother, the drugs, the inappropriate behavior between artistic director (Vincent Cassel) and ballerina and the dedicated lifestyle of a ballerina. The movie is about Nina's battle for perfection and what it does to a person. A side note - I never realized how similar Portman and Kunis look.

The acting was superb and the movie has been nominated for 4 Golden Globes. Black Swan is a MUST SEE. In the theater must-see, not Netflix!

We've been dying to see that!! Glad you girls enjoyed it. When Natalie Portman was still filming the movie, we actually thought it was the remake of The Black Swan with Maureen O'Hara. Obviously this is a completely different storyline - there are no swashbuckling renegade pirates around Jamaica like in the 1942 film :)
