A few years back, the NCAA ruled that William and Mary's logo was politically incorrect - a WM with two feathers. William and Mary is known as the Tribe - we used to be the William and Mary Indians. For a long time, there was no mascot and the years that we spent there 2000-2005, Ebirt - a big green blob - was the mascot. Ebirt is Tribe spelled backwards.
This past year William and Mary has been looking for a new mascot (we will still remain the Tribe) and earlier this week it was announced that our new mascot would be the Griffin. It's a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle. Here's the WM official video introduction.
Here's Jon Stewart's (distinguished alumni 1980) take on it: Daily Show
In other NCAA mascot news, the University of North Dakota has officially retired the Fighting Sioux name and logo.
All in all, a bad week for the only two schools to fight the NCAA on their mascot rulings.

But it was a VERY good week for American Indians whose racial identity and culture had been misappropriated and used as an athletic good luck charm by the predominately-White universities. A VERY good week!
