Charlie St. Cloud

I'm not much of a movie theater person, but Monday night I went to see Charlie St. Cloud, bc Zac Efron is just that gorgeous.

My girlfriend and I were the only two in the theater, which was pretty cool. Or maybe sad, since we're both nearing 30 and we're at a Zac Efron movie. Either way, the movie was decent and Efron's acting was pretty good and he's pretty good looking.

If you don't want to know what happens in the movie - stop reading.

Charlie (Efron) and his little brother Sam are the only two children of a single mother (Kim Basinger) in Washington State. They have a very close relationship and do everything together, including sailing. The two brothers make a pact to practice baseball everyday at sunset until Charlie leaves for college; he's received a sailing scholarship to Stanford. The evening of Charlie's high school graduation, Charlie is driving Sam to a friend's house when they get hit from behind by a drunk driver. All is okay until a second later a semi-truck t-bones their car. Both are dead in the ambulance, but then Charlie is alive. The paramedic (Ray Liotta) can't believe it and praises St. Jude for the miracle that has occured. Charlie then realizes that Sam is laying lifeless next to him.

Fast forward five years and Charlie is the caretaker of the local cemetary. (His mother has moved to Portland). Charlie has become a recluse and is unaware of how good-looking and mysterious he is. The local town people thinks he's crazy, bc they see him talking to himself. Really, he's able to see dead people. (I think you are to assume that he can see dead people bc he was dead for a split-second). This of course means that he can see Sam and they meet everyday at sunset to play baseball. Sam says he's not ready to cross-over.

Enter Tess, a pretty girl who was an old classmate of Charlie's. She's quite the sailor now and is planning on participating in a race around the world. She's always had a crush on Charlie but didn't really know him in high school. The next day, Charlie asks her out and it's kismet! They spend the next day and a half together and Charlie arrives late for baseball practice upsetting Sam. Charlie realizes that Sam is more important and says goodbye to Tess.

The next morning Charlie is at the local coffee shop and the Coast Guard announces that the search for Tess is called off. Tess and her boat are lost at sea. She was last seen sailing her ship into a storm. He then realizes that he was never with the "live" Tess, but it was her spirit. Tess is on the verge on "life and death" wherever she is out there in the choppy water.

He sets off to find her, even though he hasn't sailed in over five years. He finds her and saves her. They end up together.

I have a feeling that the book will be better, but the movie was good. You can definitely wait for it to hit cable. It's certainly no "The Notebook", but it wasn't bad either.
