Earlier this week Lilly had her first lollipop. Tom, one of the tennis coaches at the gym, offered her one and she happily accepted. She didn't know what it was at first but after I unwrapped it she was thrilled with the goodness of Tootise Pop Lollipop.
I ran out of "crunchy stuff" a few weeks back. "Crunchy stuff" is "pickled sweet radish" - or che-po and I LOVE IT. It's my favorite in eggs with rice on Sunday morning and is also needed for Pad Thai. So since our mediocre Asian foodstore in GF cannot compare to the one in Fargo (where there is an actual Asian population) I had Brian stop by the Asian market to pick some up down there. Now, I've never been there but it sounds AMAZING! First off they had my cruchy stuff! Brian also picked up FRESH Thai chilis, GREEN papaya for som-thum, gung-chearng, some CocoRico soda for me AND fresh RAMBUTAN!! Hairy shell and all! He even asked them if they had mangosteens for me. The shopkeeper didn't know what Brian was talking about so then he repeated it in Thai (mungkut) and the shopkeeper asked Brian if he spoke Thai! And when Brian asked for gung-chearng (Chinese sausage) he asked if he spoke Chinese. The shopkeeper was very confused by this tall Norwegian white guy and his capability to speak and know of these foreign foods! And then B explained he was married to a Thai. Brian was very happy with his purchases at the Asian store and said, "It even smells like the Asian stores in NoVA" - also known as the STINK that is frogs, fish, chicken, beef and pork mixed with dried mushrooms and other funky smells from Asia that permiate throughout the Asian grocery store. That night Brian had his first attempt at making Som-Thum! Turned out pretty well!!
So that's our sugar and our spice for the week. Here's a picture of Brian's grandma being the badass that she is. She's a true testament that age is just a number! She's leaving the NPS annual Braut Fry with a plumber (the son of one of her friends).
